Mood board: Picture Monica Vitti in a sleek sleeveless dress in 1962’s L’Eclisse or a trenchcoat in 1960s L’Avventura: Leather specialist Tod’s take on luxury has a classic, cinematic sweep, and for S/S 2020, the label looked to Vitti’s feminine wardrobe in films directed by Michelangelo Antonioni. This wasn’t a nostalgic collection, it offered a forward-looking wardrobe in organic tones with splashes of sunny yellow. Cue rubberised leather trenchcoats, nappa intarsia pleated skirts, subtly oversized suiting and body skimming sleeveless dresses with sporty poppers, all sartorial staples for Tod’s leading woman.
Best in show: Tod’s skill lies in its mastery of fabrication. Alongside rubberised, tie-dye and swirling laser cut leather, a pony skin zebra print – the only one in the collection – had a modern, seductive flair. This was used in smart pencil skirts and trench coats, it’s black and white hues complemented the monochromatic hues offered elsewhere.
Finishing touches: For that easy understated luxury, of smart sliders and loafers were imagined in an array of colourful leathers and skins.
