It’s where Mandarin Oriental launched its first flagship property over 50 years ago, so if any city is going to be fortunate enough to be blessed with two of the group’s properties, it will undoubtedly be Hong Kong.
Located amidst the towering skyscrapers in the heart of the city’s shopping and business districts, the Landmark Mandarin Oriental - which opened in 2005 - is housed within an exclusive shopping centre and is the hip, younger sister to the nearby original grande dame.
Now, in celebration of its tenth anniversary, the 113 guest rooms - originally outfitted by Hong Kong-born Peter Remedios - have been given a facelift, courtesy of local interior designer Joyce Wang, whose characteristic attention to detail and passion for craftsmanship is evident, from the ‘personal pantries’ that feature crystal vitrines that showcases a daily selection of edible treats, to the soft, considered lighting, brass details and plush rugs that are based on water colour paintings of crocodile, lizard and ostrich skins.
The restaurants and bars, dressed by prolific hospitality designer Adam D, Tihany, might have remained the same, but their timeless aesthetics continue to provide a subtle background for the food - in particular at the two-Michelin star Amber - to shine.
And while the hotel sadly doesn’t have any views of the city’s impressive skyline, it does mean more reason to hunker down in the spa and indulge in a treatment or two.
